Unexpected downtime

My calendar showed this week to be a busy one. That all went out the window when Sadie woke up Saturday morning with her right eye swollen shut. We went to the vet. She was diagnosed with a corneal ulcer (exact cause unknown). I was advised to cancel all therapy dog events and grooming appointments for the next 7-10 days. I also had to bow out of Wednesday’s bee group sew day due to a follow-up vet appt.

It’s been a weird week. And next week is shaping up to be more of the same, but for an entirely different reason.

My father-in-law’s rapidly declining health is one reason we put spring travel plans on hold. Since Christmas, my husband has made several trips to Florida to help his mom deal with his father’s advanced stage Alzheimer’s. It finally became too much for my mother-in-law to handle and he was placed in a memory care facility about a month ago. My father-in-law passed away this afternoon.

My husband was on the road two hours after he received the news of his father’s passing. I’ll join him once arrangements are finalized and we have a plan in place for Sadie. This way, he can stay on after the funeral to help his mom for a few days. It also gives us time to figure out what to do with Sadie since she’s got another week of eye therapy 4x per day. The fact that our vet no longer offers boarding services certainly doesn’t help the matter. Dogs are also not allowed in the homes of many of my husband’s family members (including his parents) so taking Sadie with me really isn’t an option. I may have found a solution, but it depends on which day the funeral service is held because I’d need to retrieve her highness by mid-morning on Thursday. Fingers crossed this works out because the overnight pet sitter option for two nights is expensive.

Now to make my packing list and potential things I need to cancel (again) for next week.
