Stitching for a Cause

One of my co-workers has ovarian cancer.  She’s stage III, I think.  Whatever stage she’s in, she had to go through several weeks of chemo before the doctor performed major surgery to remove the tumors and other parts to which the cancer had spread.  I understand she has another 8-10 weeks of chemo once she’s recovered from her surgery.  Her recovery from surgery has been slow.  Usually upbeat, her spirits are starting to sag, especially since she’s back in the hospital due to complications from her surgery.

My school provides meals on a rotating basis to her family.  I was “meals on wheels” yesterday.  Along with the meal, I also delivered a quilt.  It’s done in the teal colors that are associated with ovarian cancer, plus pink, white and green so it doesn’t scream “ovarian cancer” when she’s out in public.

The design was inspired by a quilt I saw at Quilting by the Bay in Panama City and a book by Valori Wells I have at home.  The pattern reminds me of subway tiles.  I also included a wee bit of prized authentic Hawaiian fabric I have in my stash.  it’s the hot pink and white floral.  I used bamboo/cotton batting because I love the drape of that particular batting.  The finished quilt is 50″x60″ and I simply stitched in the ditch and attached the binding by machine.

Playing the waiting game

I ordered a new cabinet insert for Jewel on 12/15/11.

Received an email that shipping info had been send to FedEx on 12/30/11.

FedEx picked up on 1/3/12.

I received my insert today (1/10/12).

I can understand the New Year’s holiday for the delay in picking up, but to take a week to get from Eugene, Oregon to Atlanta?

What’s up with that?  It’s not like I live out in the remote wilderness somewhere.

The cabinet insert fits snugly around Jewel and will enhance my sewing experience, but sheesh!  That long to arrive?  Really? or “For real?” as my students would say.

Friday Funnies

You may have seen her calendars at your local quilt shop, but Mrs. Bobbins’ comic strips are also available over at the Pickle Dish blog .  A new comic strip is posted at least once a month, sometimes more often.

I was searching through the older posts today and loved this one:
